Anthony Ranieri, L.Ac.

About Me

Anthony Ranieri is an acupuncturist and herbal pharmacologist who has recently returned to New York from Los Angeles to begin a practice here. He studied Chinese medicine at Emperor's College of Traditional Oriental Medicine in Santa Monica, CA, where he received a masters of traditional oriental medicine, summa cum laude. Previously he studied bodywork at the Swedish Institute in New York City and holds licenses for both acupuncture and massage in the States of California and New York. He is also nationally certified as a Diplomate of Acupuncture by the NCCAOM.

Recently, he has been selected by the World Health Organization as an author for the next edition of ICD (International Classification of Diseases) codes—one sees these in use on the forms doctors give their patients for submitting claims to insurance companies—which will have coding for patterns recognized in traditional medicine. He has taught the fundamentals of Chinese Medicine to massage students in Los Angeles, and gives talks and writes pieces about Chinese Medicine with a view toward demystifying it for American consumers and helping patients with a western point of view understand what it is, how it works, and how to utilize it for their needs. He recognizes that diet is a key and fundamental aspect of health maintenance and, as an accomplished cook and proponent of the use of food as medicine, will often incorporate food information, and even recipes, into a patient's treatment plan. Some of what Anthony has to say about Chinese medicine, and its relationship to western medicine (together with links to articles and even some recipes) can be found in the Notes section of his professional page on Facebook, here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anthony-Ranieri-LAc/153671964658789.

Anthony's practice in acupuncture is a general practice, in which he offers treatment for a wide array of patient needs, including health maintenance, joint and muscle pain, headache, common infections and allergies, issues with digestion, sleep problems, difficulty breathing, menstrual issues, male and female reproductive issues, post-operative and post-stroke convalescence, psycho-emotional well-being, addiction and adjunctive support for medical treatment of other conditions, such as managing the adverse effects of chemotherapy in the treatment of cancer. He employs all of the traditional modalities of Chinese medicine, including acupuncture, herbal formulas, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion and massage.

As someone who is oriented toward teaching and information-sharing, one message he would like share is that, contrary to common perception, Chinese medicine is not only for the treatment of pain. It is a complete medicine, which can effectively treat a multitude of disorders. A suffering patient is doing him/herself a disservice by not considering Chinese medicine as a treatment option just because the issue is something other than physical pain. The World Health Organization has compiled a resource on conditions for which acupuncture is an effective treatment, which can be found here: http://apps.who.int/medicinedocs/en/d/Js4926e/5.html. Even this list is incomplete as it only references conditions for which research has been done. The Chinese will tell you that this medicine has been used effectively to treat every health complaint, for a very long time.
